Pennsylvania Dutch Funny Cake: Chocolate Dessert Recipes

This funny (aka weird) recipe is a cake baked in a pie shell with a gooey chocolate layer between the two. It’s a pretty niche Pennsylvania recipe, but it deserves to be shared with the world!

The Ingredients

1 Unbaked Pie Shell
1 Egg (for the eggwash)

For the Cake
1/2 c Sugar
6 tbs Unsalted Butter, softened
1 Egg
3/4 tsp Vanilla
3/4 tsp Baking Powder
1/4 tsp Baking Soda
1/2 tsp Salt
1 c. Cake Flour (All Purpose would work too)
1/2 c. Buttermilk

For the Chocolate Syrup
1/2 c. Sugar
1/3 c. Cocoa Powder
1/3 c. Hot Coffee
1/4 tsp Vanilla

The Process:

1. Mix all of the syrup ingredients into a small pan and heat on the stove JUST until the sugar is dissolved. Set aside.
2. Preheat your oven to 375.
3. Cream together the butter and sugar.
4. Beat in the egg, followed by the vanilla.
5. Add your dry ingredients.
6. Mix in the buttermilk just until combined.
7. Line a shallow 9-inch pie dish with your pie shell.
8. Spread the cake batter evenly over the bottom of the pie shell.
9. Carefully drizzle the chocolate syrup over the cake batter. It looks messy now but the syrup will soak into the cake as it bakes.
10. Brush the edge of your pie crust (decorated or fluted however you want) with an eggwash of 1 egg and 1 tbs of water.
11. Bake at 375 for 25-30 minutes until a cake tester comes out clean.
