Traeger Grills use pellets as for fuel and if you’ve never started one up, it can be a bit intimidating. But after doing it a few times, it’s actually quite easy to do so follow along and I’ll show you how!

First open the main lid and check that there are enough pellets in the hopper. Refill the hopper if it looks kinda low. On the control panel, turn the knob to Smoke and then flip the power switch on. This turns on the fan motor and the auger starts feeding pellets into the firebox. After about 4 minutes, the grill starts smoking.

When you see a good amount of white smoke close the lid and set the knob to the desired temperature. At this point, leave the grill alone until it reaches the correct temperature roughly another 5 minutes. There’s a thermometer on the control panel so you can see how hot it’s getting.

The thing I like about the Traeger Grill is that the heat is kind of an indirect heat and you won’t get flare ups like on a gas grill. I’ve also found it’s not as easy to burn my food these days because there aren’t direct flames under the cooking surface. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m using hickory pellets but my meats come out with a reddish look after it’s done but it looks delicious! To shut down the grill, leave the lid open and turn the knob to Shut Down. The fan will continue to run for another 5 minutes then shut off. At that point, flip the power switch to Off.
